Wildfire Forces Evacuation, and Results Support Decision

The Camp Fire in Northern California destroyed the Adventist Health Feather River Hospital, fortunately the hospital had successfully evacuation all patients.

A hospital spokesperson told the San Francisco CBS news outlet that all patients were safely evacuated but the hospital was destroyed.

Wikipedia tells us  the Adventist Health Feather River is a 101-bed acute care hospital located in Butte County near the city of Paradise in California, with a wide array of outpatient departments and services designed to meet the health care needs of Paradise and its neighboring communities.

Many hospitals have a good record of emergency planning, based initially on the guidance from the Joint Commission and more recently on the requirements from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) emergency preparedness rule.    For the time being, we should assume the evacuation went well, and that part of the planning leading up to it was as a result of compliance with the CMS rules.

So, the next time your emergency manager suggests an intense plan to evacuate all patients, staff and visitors, rather than grumble, maybe you should just remember the name Adventist Health Feather River, which is a hospital no more.
